The Eyller Berg in Kamp-Lintfort transformed into a motorsport mecca on May 1st, drawing thousands of fans for the 72nd annual ADAC Motocross. Spectators witnessed wild drifts, tough overtaking maneuvers and meters -wide jumps as drivers pushed their limits. However, the high-octane action on the track was only half the story. Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of volunteers from the German Red Cross (DRK) worked tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone involved.

A Tradition of Care: The DRK’s enduring Commitment

The DRK’s involvement in the motocross event is a long-standing tradition. According to Florian Riedel, chairman of the DRK local association Kamp-Lintfort, The DRK has always looked after the event. What began as a local endeavor has evolved into a notable regional operation over the past 15 years.

Today, the DRK district association Niederrhein collaborates with external partners, including the THW (Federal Agency for Technical Relief) and the volunteer fire brigade. This collaboration is the result of meticulous planning that begins months in advance. Riedel notes, We will start organizing in January. Coordination with all managers is great – it is a real team performance that we can be proud of.

75 Volunteers: A Growing Need

This year, approximately 75 volunteers dedicated their time to providing medical support, from the evening before the event until 7 p.m. This number has nearly doubled in the last decade, reflecting the increasing demands of the event. The team included medical assistants, paramedics, and an emergency doctor, equipped to handle everything from minor injuries to intensive care situations.All-wheel-drive vehicles were strategically positioned to ensure rapid response across the challenging terrain.

Oliver Rühl, head of operations, emphasized the importance of this preparedness: These high requirements are necessary. We know from experiance that such races can also cause vrey serious injuries – that is not a theory,that is reality.

Dynamics and Dedication: The Essence of Volunteerism

Despite a relatively low number of major safety incidents on May 1st, the DRK team remained vigilant. the drivers are professionals – you can see that from the comparative small number of accidents, Riedel explained. But we have to be prepared for everything. The location is very dynamic and changes with every round.

The DRK team addressed various incidents, including falls among visitors and organizers, driver injuries, and cases of circulatory problems due to the summer heat. This unpredictability underscores the demanding yet vital nature of their work.

Both Rühl and riedel stressed the importance of volunteerism: Everything we do here happens voluntarily. Our helpers invest their free time – without these people, an event like this could no longer take place. Rühl also highlighted the financial, logistical, and personnel investments made by the DRK, adding, It’s a lot of effort – but there is a reason.Safety has its price, even in volunteering.

A Plea for Responsibility

Rühl and Riedel also appealed to spectators to be mindful of emergency access routes. Unluckily, every year we experience that spectators from unreasonableness block the access roads for emergency vehicles. This can cost life in an emergency. They urged attendees to exercise consideration and awareness of the importance of clear escape routes.
