Experts Credit H1N1 Mutation for Early West Coast Flu Surge

Experts Credit H1N1 Mutation for Early West Coast Flu Surge

October 23, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Influenza cases on the West Coast are rising months earlier than normal, prompting US health experts to stress the importance of the annual vaccine.

  • Flu activity is tracking about four weeks to two and a half months ahead of recent seasons, with West Coast states experiencing high positive test rates early in October.
  • Public health laboratories report that a mutated strain of the influenza A H1N1 virus accounts for the majority of early submissions to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Health authorities recommend that anyone six months of age and older receive the annual influenza vaccine promptly to reduce severe illness and hospitalization.

West Coast Flu Surge Driven by H1N1 Mutation

Flu activity typically ramps up in December and hits its peak in February, but the current season kicked into action earlier this year, according to data. A new mutation of the H1N1 influenza A strain—the virus responsible for the 2009 swine flu pandemic—was blamed by several specialists for the premature beginning of the season. This strain accounted for 242 of 300 influenza viruses reported by public health laboratories to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to date.

In California, influenza test positivity hovered slightly above 1% in early October during the past two flu seasons. As of 10 October, that rate reached 9.65%, according to data from the state’s department of health. In Washington state, roughly 1 in 10 people tested for the flu last week was positive, according to data from the state Department of Public Health. Alex Greninger, who leads the Division of Infectious Disease Diagnostics at the University of Washington’s Department of Laboratory Medicine, noted that October is bringing influenza figures typically observed in January to the area.

Flu Spreads Eastward as Pediatric Cases Rise

As the season progresses, the virus is spreading eastward. Dr. Caitlin Rivers, an epidemiologist who directs the Center for Outbreak Response Innovation at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, noted to CNN that all regions of the country are seeing increases. In Arizona, California, Hawaii, and Nevada, the proportion of positive flu tests reached at least 10%, while the South is catching up quickly.

In North Texas, pediatric flu cases are rising four to six weeks ahead of schedule. Children’s Health Dallas reported a 36% increase in flu cases over a single week, with Influenza B, COVID, and RSV appearing less frequently, according to FOX 4 News Dallas-Fort Worth. Dr. Zarchary Most, an infectious disease specialist at Children’s Health Dallas, recommended that eligible children and adults receive their vaccinations immediately, noting that children receiving their first flu vaccine often require two doses administered about a month apart.

Vaccines Match Most Circulating Flu Strains

The FDA granted approval in August for the 2026-27 flu shots, which are designed to protect against H1N1, H3N2 (the most prevalent strain from the prior season), and an influenza B variety. University of Pennsylvania microbiologist Scott Hensley communicated via email that two of the three elements in the current season’s immunization appear to align exceptionally well with circulating flu strains. However, the H1N1 mutation might affect antibodies in younger people, and with flu season picking up steam, Hensley advised that getting vaccinated early is prudent. Dr. Sharon Vuppula from Southern New Hampshire Medical Center said the vaccine is about 40% to 60% effective at preventing the flu, but most importantly helps keep people out of the hospital by lessening symptom severity and protecting vulnerable populations such as infants and elderly family members.

Under US health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a veteran opponent of vaccination who has orchestrated a restructuring of traditional pediatric immunization timelines, promotion for flu shots has decreased.

Nationally, about 2.1% of doctor visits last week were for influenza-like illness, which remains below the national baseline, according to CDC data.
