Exercise: The Non-Negotiable Foundation for Leadership and Life
Benjamin Kolthoff, a managing director, husband, and father of four, doesn’t view exercise as a leisure activity. For him,it’s fundamental – the bedrock upon which his success in all areas of life is built. He candidly admits that he simply isn’t an effective leader without prioritizing his physical well-being.
“The truth is: I’m not a good boss without exercise,” Kolthoff explains. “Many people see sport as a hobby. For me it is indeed the foundation.” Juggling the demands of a high-pressure role, a family, and personal life requires a constant striving for balance.Kolthoff believes that without that balance, peak performance is unattainable.
This conviction has led to a firm, unwavering rule: at least 30 minutes of exercise every single day. It’s not optional; it’s “non-negotiable.” To integrate this commitment into his busy schedule, Kolthoff has strategically adapted his environment and routine.
His personal fitness infrastructure includes:
- A Peloton bike in the living room
- A dedicated strength training area in the garage
- Yoga sessions incorporated into his workday
- Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training two to three times per week
- Weekend jogs before family commitments begin
Kolthoff emphasizes that exercise isn’t squeezed in “when it’s convenient,” but rather deliberately scheduled. He understands that arriving at the office at 9 a.m. on a Monday requires clarity, focus, and energy – qualities that are cultivated through consistent physical activity.
He recognizes the ripple effect of his own well-being. ”I am a reflection of my team,” Kolthoff states. “If I come stressed and unbalanced, this is transferred. If I come with energy and balance, it inspires others.” Exercise serves as his crucial outlet, enabling him to thrive in all aspects of his life.
Kolthoff’s message is clear: those with notable responsibilities - whether to a team, a family, or a company – must first prioritize their own well-being.Taking obligation for oneself is the first step towards effectively leading and caring for others.
