Ex-Congressman Sergio Ojeda Uribe Dies at 83 in Chile’s Los Lagos Region
Sergio Ojeda Uribe, a former Chilean deputy, died early Sunday morning at the age of 83 after a battle with a terminal illness. The news was confirmed by the regional leadership of the Christian Democrat party (DC) in the Los Lagos region.
Born on March 12, 1943, in the commune of Río Negro, Ojeda Uribe was a lawyer by profession. He served as a deputy representing the former District 55 – encompassing Osorno, San Juan de la Costa, and San Pablo – from 1990 to 2018. He was recognized as an Illustrious Son of Osorno for his contributions. His operate focused on human rights issues, according to the Biblioteca del Congreso Nacional.
Emeterio Carrillo Torres, the regional president of the DC, described Ojeda as a key figure within the party, emphasizing his dedication to social justice and public service.
Throughout his career, Ojeda Uribe provided legal counsel to individuals who had been dismissed from their jobs, labor unions engaged in collective bargaining, and agricultural workers in Osorno. He also contributed to Diario Austral as a journalist and served as a radio commentator.
Ojeda Uribe was a founding member of the Osorno Mortgage Debtors Association and held the presidency of the Academic Association of the Osorno Professional Institute, now known as the University of Los Lagos. He was married to María Mercedes Schmidt and had four children.
