Eurovision: Romania and Bulgaria Return Amidst Israel Participation Debate
Romania and Bulgaria to Return to Eurovision Song Contest in 2025
After several years of absence, Romania and Bulgaria have confirmed their participation in the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest. The return of both nations coincides with the competition’s landmark 70th anniversary.
Romania last competed in the contest in 2023, while Bulgaria’s last appearance was in 2022. Both broadcasters cited the escalating financial costs of participation as a key factor in their previous withdrawals.
The re-entry of Romania and Bulgaria is viewed as a positive advancement for the Eurovision Song Contest organization, particularly as it navigates a complex situation surrounding Israel’s potential participation. Several countries, including Spain and the Netherlands, have publicly indicated thay may withdraw from the contest, scheduled to be held in Vienna, should Israel be allowed to compete.
A special meeting of the european Broadcasting Union (EBU) members, initially planned for November to address the issue of Israel’s participation, was postponed following the ceasefire in Gaza. The discussion has now been rescheduled for the EBU’s regular meeting in December, according to VRT news.
The outcome of the December meeting remains uncertain, and the potential ramifications for the final lineup of participating countries are still unknown. Considering this ongoing uncertainty, Belgium’s participation in the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest also remains to be officially confirmed.
