Austria Confirms Eurovision Participation Despite Boycott Concerns
Vienna, Austria – Austria’s national broadcaster, ORF, has confirmed its participation in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest, despite a growing boycott movement triggered by Israel‘s inclusion in the competition. The decision comes as several European broadcasters reassess their involvement following Israel’s performance in May, where it topped the public vote but finished second overall after jury votes were tallied.
The controversy stems from concerns over the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Ireland’s RTÉ has called for an audit of the public vote adn stated it would be “unconscionable” to participate in the 2026 contest if Israel also takes part “given the appalling loss of lives and the humanitarian crisis” in Gaza. Slovenia’s RTV SLO has already announced a boycott “on behalf of the 20,000 children who died in Gaza.”
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) responded with voting reforms,to be implemented by the December 4,2025 general assembly, including restrictions on government campaigning, limits on votes per participant, and the reintroduction of professional jury panels in the semi-finals. enhanced technical security measures to prevent vote fraud are also planned.
While Sweden, which shares the record for moast Eurovision wins (seven) with Ireland, confirmed its participation on Friday, citing the new rules as aligning with its conditions for involvement – broad European support and an apolitical competition – other nations remain undecided.
Finland,Norway, denmark, and Iceland have voiced support for the EBU’s voting changes. Iceland’s RUV will review its position at a board meeting next Wednesday. The BBC has until spring to finalize its participation, contingent on the outcome of its industry-led selection process.
The Netherlands, a participant in the inaugural 1956 contest, is among the countries boycotting the event.Ireland’s Prime Minister, Micheál Martin, expressed his “full understanding” of his country’s withdrawal, calling it “an act of solidarity.”
