European Athletics Championships 2026: Matt Hudson-Smith and Amy Hunt Shine in Birmingham

August 13, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

At the European Athletics Championships 2026 in Birmingham, Great Britain’s Amy Hunt secured the 100m gold medal with a resilient performance, overcoming a slow start to overhaul her rivals. According to BBC Sport, the nearly six-foot-tall sprinter sat seventh after the first 10m before powering through the field.

Overcoming the Blocks for European Glory

Standing nearly six feet tall, her acceleration out of the starting blocks lagged behind the rest of the eight-athlete final, placing her seventh at the 10-meter mark. The victory ended her wait for continental gold, arriving just two years after she finished seventh in the previous European final held in Rome.

Reflecting on the triumph, Hunt told BBC Sport, “I just had such a magical feeling. I’ve won English Schools here, raced here as a 13, 14-year-old. I just had a feeling that this was going to be my night.” She added, “My first gold. I think it was definitely time for an upgrade, and I’m now kind of fully established.”

Elite Fields and Tactical Realities in Birmingham

The high-stakes final featured seasoned contenders, including British record holder Dina Asher-Smith. Entering the event as the defending champion, the 30-year-old Asher-Smith chased a historic seventh gold medal that would have tied her as the most successful athlete in the history of the championships. BBC Sport reported that Asher-Smith could not break into the medal positions, finishing fifth with a time of 11.10 seconds. Poland’s Ewa Swoboda claimed silver in 11.02, while Belgium’s Delphine Nkansa captured bronze in 11.06.

Expanded Schedules and Upcoming Heats

BBC Sport confirmed that Hunt faces a dense schedule with up to three additional opportunities to expand her medal count in Birmingham. She is slated to compete in the 200m event alongside both the women’s and mixed 4x100m relay squads. Asher-Smith similarly returns to action to target the women’s 200m podium before the relay rounds close out the weekend.
