EU Rejects US Trade Pressure Over Green Rules and China Tariff Evasion

August 16, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The European Union is facing renewed trade pressure from the United States as of August 14, 2026, following allegations that the bloc is facilitating the evasion of U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods. Washington is simultaneously demanding that Brussels roll back landmark environmental and human rights supply chain mandates affecting international business operations.

Washington’s Ultimatum on Regulatory Alignment

The United States government has signaled a hardening stance toward EU regulatory frameworks, specifically targeting the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). According to a U.S. government document released this week, these directives impose “extraterritorial reach” and “onerous supply chain due diligence obligations” that disadvantage American companies competing within the European market.

Andrew Puzder, the U.S. ambassador to the EU, took to social media on Friday to demand that Brussels “align” these environmental and human rights standards with the existing U.S.-EU trade agreement.

For multinational corporations navigating these shifting requirements, the regulatory environment has become increasingly volatile.

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) Controversy

Tensions are further exacerbated by the implementation of the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Ambassador Puzder characterized the policy as “a tariff in substance, no matter the ‘climate policy’ label.” This critique strikes at the heart of the EU’s green transition strategy, which aims to prevent “carbon leakage” by taxing imports from jurisdictions with less stringent emissions regulations.

While the EU has already delayed the implementation of certain aspects of its sustainability directives and exempted smaller firms to appease critics, Washington maintains that these concessions are insufficient. The standoff creates a complex landscape for manufacturers and exporters.

Allegations of Chinese Tariff Evasion

Beyond regulatory disputes, the White House has placed the EU under scrutiny regarding “illegal transshipment” from China. A report released Thursday by the White House identified the EU as a risk area where goods from China are allegedly rerouted through third countries to bypass sweeping levies imposed by President Donald Trump. The U.S. administration has pledged to utilize artificial intelligence to detect and mitigate these customs fraud practices.

European Commission spokesperson Arianna Podesta responded to the accusations by stating that the EU shares the U.S. objective of tackling customs fraud.

Structural Impact on Global Commerce

The intersection of AI-driven customs enforcement and protectionist trade policy creates a high-stakes environment for logistics providers and global importers.

With the U.S. threatening further action if its demands are not met, the coming months will likely see a test of the EU’s resolve to maintain its legislative trajectory. Whether Brussels will offer further modifications to its green mandates remains uncertain, but the pressure to deliver a solution that satisfies Washington’s commercial concerns is mounting daily.
