EU announces a billion-dollar payment for drone development

EU Mobilizes‍ €1 Billion for Accelerated Drone Production to Bolster⁤ Ukraine & Strengthen Defence Capabilities

Brussels – October 1, 2025 – The ‍European Union today announced a €1 billion (approximately $1.06 billion USD) ⁤investment to rapidly scale up drone production capacity across member states, with a significant portion earmarked ‌to directly ⁣support Ukraine’s defense efforts. ⁣The funding, drawn from the European Defence Fund (EDF), aims to address critical shortages ⁢in unmanned aerial systems and accelerate the progress of ‍next-generation drone ⁢technologies.

This ⁢initiative comes as Ukraine continues to face intense aerial bombardment, particularly in regions like kharkiv, ‌and as the EU seeks to ‍bolster⁤ its own defense industrial base amid evolving⁤ geopolitical threats. The investment will‍ focus on increasing production of reconnaissance, surveillance, and attack drones, as well as counter-drone systems. According to⁢ recent data from the Ukrainian General⁢ Staff, drone ‍losses have been substantial, ⁣with 249⁣ destroyed since the beginning ⁢of the year,⁣ bringing the total to⁣ 65,552.simultaneously, Ukrainian‌ forces have destroyed 11,223 tanks, 23,294 armored vehicles, 33,324 artillery‍ systems, and ‍other military equipment. ‍

The‍ EU ‍funding ‌will be distributed through competitive ‍calls for proposals,⁤ prioritizing projects that demonstrate⁢ rapid scalability, technological ⁤innovation, ⁢and collaboration between European companies. The European Commission anticipates the first contracts will be ⁢awarded within the next six months, with initial drone deliveries expected within‌ 18-24 months. “This⁣ is a crucial step ⁤towards strengthening Europe’s strategic ⁤autonomy and ensuring we can provide Ukraine‌ with the tools it needs ‍to defend itself,” stated a Commission spokesperson. ⁤

The announcement follows⁢ a recent wave of Russian attacks on Kharkiv, where at least eight‌ people were⁤ injured ⁤in strikes utilizing gliding bombs and ballistic ⁢missiles, causing significant damage including a fire covering ‌2,800 square meters at the Barabaschowo⁤ market.‍ Despite ongoing fighting, approximately 1.3 million people remain in the city.‍ Ukraine has been defending itself against ⁤the ⁣Russian invasion for over three and a ‌half‍ years, with the conflict increasingly characterized‌ by high attrition rates ⁤and a slowing of initial Russian advances.
