Ethan Vernon Clinches Tour Down Under Stage 4 Sprint for NSN Cycling Team

February 1, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Ethan Vernon Secures Stage 4 Victory at Tour Down Under Amidst Team Challenges

Ethan Vernon of the NSN Cycling team took a decisive stage win at the Tour Down Under’s stage 4, capitalizing on a dramatically altered race profile and overcoming significant team setbacks.

Vernon had entered the race in good form, but hadn’t yet been able to convert that into a stage victory in the climber-pleasant event. Though,a chaotic day for the team ultimately opened the door for the British rider. The stage, originally planned with three ascents of Willunga hill, was modified due to extreme heat (over 40°C) and dangerous fire conditions.

Further complicating matters, the team lost key lead-out riders Corbin Strong (suffering from a stage 1 crash) and Jake Stewart (who broke his collarbone in a crash) during the stage. This forced a constant re-evaluation of their strategy.

Despite these challenges, neo-pro Brady Gilmore stepped up, positioning Vernon for the sprint in the brutal heat. Sports director Sam Bewley praised the team’s execution, noting that Vernon “won quite easily” and highlighting Gilmore’s remarkable performance in his first World Tour race.Gilmore not only delivered Vernon to the front but also attempted to protect his wheel, a tactic that proved triumphant.

Bewley stated, “We know that Ethan’s in great shape, and the guys have been really close the last couple of days, but haven’t quite executed, whereas today, they just nailed it.”

The victory secured not only first place for Vernon but also fourth place for Gilmore, marking a successful day for the NSN Cycling Team.
