Ethan Hawke on The Weight and the Importance of Real World Immersion

September 19, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Returning to Practical Locations in The Weight

Hawke’s latest cinematic project breaks away from modern digital fabrication. For The Weight, Hawke and director Padraic McKinley transported the cast deep into the Bavarian Forest, which stands in for the 1930s Oregon wilderness. The location serves as the harsh backdrop for Hawke’s character, Sam Murphy, a gold-smuggling convict.

Hawke contrasted this immersive approach with his history in films like Training Day and carer-defining projects like White Fang, where he trudged through snowy Alaska at age 19. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter regarding the September 18 theatrical release, Hawke explained his aversion to digital shortcuts. “50 percent of Training Day is Denzel and I driving around in a car. If we had done that in front of a green screen, it would be such a lesser version of that film. And while it’s hard to articulate why, it just smells bad,” Hawke stated.

He added that relying entirely on computers for environments cheapens the final product, noting, “It’s not like it can’t be done. Of course, it can be done if the writing is really exceptional.”

Historical Context and Character Motivation

In The Weight, Hawke portrays Sam Murphy, a World War I veteran and widowed single father struggling during the Great Depression. A misunderstanding involving two corrupt cops lands him in prison with a sentence long enough to cost him custody of his young daughter. Russell Crowe stars alongside Hawke as Warden Clancy, who offers Murphy an under-the-table deal to steal gold before Franklin D. Roosevelt’s executive order requires its surrender to halt economic deflation, in exchange for an early release.

Rather than seeing Murphy as a standard antihero, Hawke looked to his own family history for inspiration. He modeled the character’s traits after his World War II veteran grandfather, seeking to channel the “Greatest Generation’s” ethics of equality and mutual support. “That whole generation’s old-fashioned American ethics — the unwavering belief in the equality of mankind and pulling together for each other — was the spirit that my grandfather took with him. I really wanted to play a character who represented that,” Hawke shared.

This creative direction also brought Hawke together with Russell Crowe, an actor he has long wanted to work with. The two nearly crossed paths over two decades earlier when Hawke was in contention for Paul Bettany’s role in Peter Weir’s 2003 film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, a director who previously helmed Hawke’s breakout in 1989’s Dead Poets Society.

The Black Phone Trilogy Outlook

Shifting from historical drama to horror, Hawke also addressed his villainous role as “The Grabber” in Scott Derrickson’s successful Black Phone films. Following positive reviews for his dual turns as the masked antagonist, Hawke noted that a potential third film rests entirely on the director’s creative vision.

“If he has an idea that excites him, then I’m sure everybody would,” Hawke said regarding the prospect of rounding out the story into a trilogy.

As the entertainment industry continues to balance practical location filming with digital innovation, the enduring preference for physical authenticity highlights a broader demand for tangible craftsmanship in modern storytelling.
