Germans prioritize spending on food and travel as disposable income rises, a recent survey reveals. Nearly half of all citizens would allocate additional funds to culinary experiences, while travel and vacation plans are a close second, according to research released today by the Foundation for Future Studies (Stiftung für Zukunftsfragen) commissioned by tobacco company BAT.
The study, conducted in 2023, indicates a critically important shift in consumer preferences as previous surveys. 46 percent of German residents would increase spending on food and beverages, up from 36 percent in 2020 and 29 percent in 2010. Travel and leisure activities are desired by 45 percent of respondents, a slight decrease from 48 percent in 2020, but a notable increase from 38 percent in 2010.
the Foundation interprets these findings as a growing focus on everyday life and quality of life.”The stronger weighting of nutrition and personal interests points to a growing orientation towards practicality and quality of life,” stated researchers. They note that enjoying food serves multiple purposes, including physical well-being, social connection, and self-reward. Travel continues to be viewed as a valuable means of relaxation, personal growth, and broadening one’s horizons. Following food and travel, hobbies and financial security ranked as subsequent priorities for increased spending.
