Essen Ice Hockey: A History of the RSC 1935-Present

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

The Moskitos Essen, a storied German ice hockey team with roots stretching back to 1935, officially dissolved after the conclusion of the 2024/25 season. The team, most recently competing in the Oberliga, had a complex history marked by numerous name changes and periods of both success and hardship.

The club’s origins lie with the Essener Roll- und Schlittschuhclub (RSC), founded in 1936. While the RSC achieved a championship in the Landesliga Nordrhein-Westfalen in 1959, the team opted not to pursue qualification for the higher Oberliga division. They later participated in the Gruppenliga, a third-tier league, starting in the 1961/62 season. A brief foray into the Oberliga followed in 1966, but the team withdrew before completing the qualification round.

Subsequent iterations of the club included ERV Essen, Essener SC, and EHC Essen, each experiencing periods of competition in the Oberliga and Regionalliga. ERV Essen advanced to the Regionalliga Nord in 1972 and was classified into the Oberliga Nord following the introduction of the 2. Bundesliga in 1973. However, the club was again withdrawn from play in 1975, leading to a succession of short-lived successor organizations.

The Moskitos Essen emerged in 1994, achieving significant milestones including winning the Bundesliga championship in 1999 and Regionalliga NRW titles in 2002 and 2010. The team also spent three seasons in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) from 1999 to 2002. In their final season, 2024/25, the Moskitos finished fourth in the Oberliga Nord and reached the eighth-final round of the playoffs.

The Eissportclub Moskitos Essen e.V., as the organization was officially known, played its home games at the Eissporthalle Essen-West, a venue with a capacity of 3,850 spectators. Danny Albrecht served as the team’s cheftrainer, and Nicolas Cornett was the captain during the 2024/25 season.
