Erie Pennsylvania Man Kills 8 People, Including Family, Before Suicide
A 45-year-old man in Erie, Pennsylvania, killed eight people before dying by suicide. The victims included his own family members, among them a 1-year-old toddler and a 5-year-old boy. Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah confirmed the shooter was related to seven of the victims, while the eighth was a friend of the pregnant woman killed in the attack. The city of Erie is located about 120 miles (190 kilometers) north of Pittsburgh.
The Family Patriarch Identified as Gunman
The tragedy in Erie has left the community grappling with the realization that the perpetrator was a grandfather. Julius Windham, the father of the slain 1-year-old Amarianna, described the shooter as a grandfather who had shown no previous signs of distress or aggression. Windham stated that the man’s outward persona of a smiling, stable family member was likely a facade.
During a memorial gathering for the victims, which included his daughter, her pregnant mother, and the mother’s 5-year-old son and unborn baby, Windham wore a T-shirt featuring images of the women and children and the words, “Forever In My Heart.” Words can’t even explain what I’m going through right now,
Windham said. But I gotta be strong for my community, you know what I’m saying? My family, my daughters, my sons, everybody.

Nicole and Debra Eller, who had known the family for over three decades, corroborated this assessment. They described the shooter as a man who had previously been perceived as a “good guy” before his behavior began to decline. The loss of life includes the shooter’s grandchildren, his own children, and a pregnant woman. They were a lovely family. Who would have thought this would ever happen?
Debra Eller said. Oh my gosh, this is so upsetting. His grandchildren, his kids, how can you do that?
Events Leading to the Erie Shooting
Investigators recovered audio and video evidence indicating the sequence of events that unfolded shortly before 5 p.m. on Friday. According to Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah, muffled gunshots were heard from inside the home. Moments later, two women, described by authorities as distressed, arrived at the residence and began pounding on the door. The gunman exited the home, shot the two women as they attempted to flee, and then returned inside.
Responding officers discovered the two women dead outside the home. Upon entering the property with the assistance of a drone and a robot, police found the bodies of the 5-year-old boy and the 1-year-old girl on the first floor. Two more women and two young men were located in a stairwell. The shooter was found deceased on the second floor.
Ongoing Investigation into Motive
While Erie Police have not yet established a formal motive, Chief Lorah suggested that mental health concerns may have played a role. Investigators are currently reviewing the cellphones of the victims killed outside the home, as authorities believe those individuals may have been aware of escalating tensions within the household. They knew something was going on at that house,
Lorah stated. We have to figure out what that is.
He emphasized the department’s commitment to determining the underlying cause of the violence, adding, But I want our community to understand the gravity of what happened and the profound impact this tragedy has had on those involved and on our community as a whole.

The Erie shooting has drawn comparisons to the 1982 massacre in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, where a gunman killed 13 people, including five of his own children.
