Kiper: USC Linebacker Eric Gentry a Rising NFL Prospect
LOS ANGELES - ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. highlighted USC linebacker Eric Gentry as a player “who pops” during a recent evaluation, citing his versatility, production, and NFL potential. Kiper drew a parallel between Gentry’s emergence and that of former Alabama receiver devonta Smith, describing both as “splendid splinters” – players who steadily rise in prominence.
Gentry, currently in his fifth year of college football and fourth with the Trojans after transferring from Arizona State, has appeared in 43 career games. He currently leads USC in both tackles and sacks, boasting career totals of 216 total tackles, 25 tackles for a loss, and 9.0 sacks, along with two interceptions and 11 passes defended.
Kiper noted Gentry’s size - listed at 6-6 and between 220-225 pounds – and the potential to add weight to his frame at the professional level. He emphasized Gentry’s instinctive play and ability to excel in all facets of linebacker play, whether rushing the passer or covering running backs.
“He is an instinctive linebacker who finds the football,” Kiper said. “Whatever you’re asking him to do, he’s able to get it done at a high level.”
USC’s linebacker coach, Rob Ryan, a longtime NFL assistant, is working directly with Gentry to further develop his skills.Kiper plans to speak with Ryan to gain further insight into Gentry’s development.
The Trojans will face Michigan State on Saturday night, with kickoff scheduled for 11:00 p.m.EST (8:00 p.m. PST).
