Erdoğan Opens Çerkezköy-Kapıkule High-Speed Train Line
“We do not give premium to this unprincipled politics, to this disgraceful politics. Whoever reaches out to the right, law, and trust of the nation will find us against them,” President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated, as reported by Hürriyet, during the opening ceremony for the Çerkezköy-Kapıkule section of the Halkalı-Kapıkule High-Speed Train Line in Kırklareli on October 9, 2026.
The newly opened rail infrastructure project connects Tekirdağ, Kırklareli, and Edirne to the high-speed rail network. Hürriyet noted that the 153-kilometer Çerkezköy-Kapıkule segment forms the longest portion of the broader 229-kilometer Halkalı-Kapıkule undertaking, built with double tracks, electrification, and signaling systems designed for speeds up to 200 kilometers per hour.
Travel times drop as regional capacity increases
Passenger travel times between Halkalı and Kapıkule will drop from four hours down to one hour and thirty minutes. Freight transit times will decrease from eight hours and thirty minutes to three hours and thirty minutes, according to figures released at the ceremony. NTV Haber reported that annual passenger capacity is projected to increase from 600,000 to 3 million, while annual freight capacity will rise from 1.5 million tons to 9.5 million tons. Hürriyet provided slightly different forward estimates, projecting passenger capacity to reach 3 million and freight capacity to reach 9.5 million tons annually.
Kapıkule’s rail station yard capacity expands from 23 to 42 tracks, with total line length growing from 15,675 meters to 51,000 meters. New station buildings are under construction in Babaeski, Lüleburgaz, and Büyükkarıştıran, alongside comprehensive renovations at the Kapıkule and Edirne station buildings. Minister Uraloğlu inspected the newly completed Edirne station building prior to the opening ceremony, visiting its interior museum spaces alongside local officials including Edirne Valisi Yunus Sezer, AK Parti Edirne Milletvekili Fatma Aksal, and AK Parti Edirne İl Başkanı Belgin İba, as detailed by Habertürk.

Integration into International Freight Corridors
The Halkalı-Kapıkule project ties directly into wider international trade routes connecting Asia and Europe. Industrial centers and organized industrial zones across Istanbul, Kocaeli, Tekirdağ, and the broader Thrace region gain direct access to European markets.
Work continues across remaining segments of the corridor. The roughly seven-kilometer Halkalı-Ispartakule segment is scheduled for service by the end of the year, reducing train bottlenecks and cutting border wait times.
Political Criticism and Institutional Response
President Erdoğan used the platform to address political opponents, accusing them of relying on disinformation and diversionary tactics rather than producing concrete projects. He defended state institutions and signaled that administrative and legal bodies will maintain scrutiny over public funds and political accountability. Transport investments over the past 24 years reached a total valuation, with approximately 80 billion dollars allocated to railways, expanding total rail length to 13,919 kilometers.
As major regional infrastructure projects reshape logistics and industrial transport networks, commercial developers, logistics providers, and regional enterprises must adapt to shifting supply chain timelines. Managing large-scale commercial expansions or cross-border logistics contracts often requires specialized legal counsel and regulatory compliance experts to handle complex municipal frameworks and transport agreements.
