Table of Contents
New Delhi – Retail flows into equity mutual funds experienced a notable downturn in august, falling by 21% to ₹1.75 lakh crore, according to data released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI). This marks a considerable shift from the ₹2.21 lakh crore recorded in July, signaling increased investor caution amid market valuations.
The decline reflects a broader trend of investors reassessing their portfolios as economic uncertainties and rising bond yields influence asset allocation decisions. The slowdown impacts various equity categories, with sectoral and thematic funds experiencing the most pronounced decrease in inflows. Understanding these shifts is crucial for both investors and fund managers navigating the evolving financial landscape.
Sectoral Funds Lead the Decline
Among equity categories, sectoral or thematic funds witnessed the steepest drop, with inflows decreasing to ₹3,893 crore in August from ₹9,426 crore in July. Within the diversified equity space, flexicap funds remained the most favored, attracting ₹7,679 crore in August, a slight increase from ₹7,654 crore the previous month. Though, small-cap funds saw a 23% reduction in inflows, falling to ₹4,993 crore from ₹6,484 crore in July, as investors grew wary of high valuations in the segment.
Mid-cap funds recorded a modest rise to ₹5,331 crore compared to ₹5,182 crore earlier, while large-cap funds saw inflows climb to ₹2,640 crore from ₹2,125 crore.
Fixed Income and Hybrid Funds Also Affected
The fixed income segment also experienced volatility. Liquid funds recorded ample outflows of ₹13,350 crore in august, while overnight funds saw inflows of ₹4,950 crore. Rising bond yields prompted investors to withdraw ₹928 crore from gilt funds. In the hybrid category, net inflows eased to ₹15,294 crore from ₹20,879 crore in July. Arbitrage funds, known for their stability, saw inflows decrease to ₹6,667 crore from ₹7,296 crore, and multi-asset allocation funds experienced a decline to ₹3,528 crore from ₹6,197 crore.
Gold ETFs See increased Investment
Despite the overall downturn in equity and fixed income, gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) benefited from increased investor interest. A 50% surge in domestic gold prices led to inflows of ₹2,190 crore in August,up from ₹1,256 crore the previous month.
For domestic investors, gold continues to act as a shield against currency fluctuations and inflationary pressures, while also offering tactical positioning ahead of pivotal global monetary policy decisions,
