England Cricket: Key Promises Ruthless Selection & County Focus After Ashes Review

March 24, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

England’s cricket team will undergo a shift in selection policy, with a greater emphasis on performance across the domestic game, according to managing director Rob Key. The announcement follows a post-Ashes review prompted by a 4-1 series defeat in Australia, where critics pointed to inadequate planning and underwhelming performances.

Key, speaking on the BBC’s Test Match Special programme, acknowledged a perception that the England Test team had grow a “closed shop,” favouring players who aligned with the aggressive “Bazball” style of play to the detriment of county cricketers. To address this, England will introduce a “county insight group” to provide input into the selection process, aiming to rebuild relationships with directors of cricket and other stakeholders in the domestic game.

“We’ve overvalued loyalty and overvalued having a settled team,” Key said. He explained that a previous focus on maintaining a consistent lineup had inadvertently created an environment lacking sufficient accountability. “We thought what we wanted to do is make sure we have a team that is settled out there [in Australia], that we proceed out there and we’re not giving debuts to opening batters [during the Ashes] and stuff like that. But what that does is it creates an environment where there’s not enough consequence. We need to be more ruthless with our selection.”

The ECB’s chief executive, Richard Gould, had previously indicated that dismissing head coach Brendon McCullum and Key would have been the “uncomplicated thing to do” following the Ashes series. Former England captain Michael Vaughan echoed this sentiment, stating on Test Match Special that the pair were “extremely, very lucky” to retain their positions, given the poor performance in Australia. Vaughan suggested that a similar outcome in football management would likely have resulted in the entire coaching staff being replaced.

McCullum is scheduled to return to work towards the end of May, ahead of a Test series against Modern Zealand starting at Lord’s on June 4th. However, Vaughan expressed disappointment that McCullum would not be arriving earlier, suggesting a more visible presence in the County Championship during its early rounds could have been beneficial for public relations. “I think at this stage, when you’re trying to win back the fans, trying to win back a little bit of the game, if I was Brendon McCullum, I’d come a few weeks earlier, get seen around the counties. I’d go and talk to a few coaches, go and speak to a few umpires, get seen out and about just for the optics. Because at this stage he needs the fans and he needs the game to kind of get behind his philosophy a little bit more.”

The ECB is also investigating reports of excessive drinking by England players during the Ashes tour, with Key expected to lead the inquiry. The BBC reported that individuals associated with Test Match Special anticipated retaliatory articles following the initial reporting on the issue.
