Honoring Anne Powell
Elon will open the weekend with a public tribute on Friday morning dedicated to the late Anne Powell, who passed away earlier this year. The ceremony begins at 9:15 a.m. on Court 1 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Anne Powell was an Elon trustee and a steadfast benefactor of Elon tennis. In 1987, she and her family presented the university with a major challenge gift that made the construction of the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center possible.
Roster Dynamics and Championship Heritage
Head coach Elizabeth Anderson enters her 23rd season leading the Phoenix, supported by first-year assistant coach Carl Gedlitschka. The program comes off back-to-back Coastal Athletic Association championships after defending its conference crown in the spring. Elon retains five players from that title-winning squad: Simone Bergeron, Cornelia Kack, Lisa Kranec, Alexis Nyborg, and Mariana Reding.
Kack earned CAA Player of the Year honors in the spring after logging 13 dual singles victories at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions, going undefeated in conference play. Bergeron and Reding secured First-Team All-CAA doubles honors after collecting 13 dual wins together. Reding paced the Phoenix with 15 singles victories, capped by a 12-match winning streak, and earned CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player recognition. Kranec contributed 10 dual singles wins and clinched the championship match against William & Mary, while Nyborg added 12 dual wins playing primarily at the Nos. 4 and 5 spots.
The roster also integrates four newcomers. Freshmen Iga Piotrowska and Alexandria Warsing join alongside transfers Lisa Dierick from Rider and Sonja Rooth from Stephen F. Austin.
Early Fall Momentum
The Phoenix enter their home invitational building on strong performances from early-season tournaments. Elon opened its fall slate on September 12-13 at the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, securing 16 total victories. Seven of those wins came against Power Four opponents, highlighted by Kack and Piotrowska capturing the Navy Doubles draw after defeating a top-seeded Virginia pairing 7-6 (3) in the semifinals.
Four players subsequently competed at the ITA All-American Championships in Cary from September 19-22. Bergeron and Reding advanced through the qualifying draw by defeating seeded pairs from Illinois and SMU, while Kack and Kranec added a prequalifying consolation doubles win against Oklahoma.
