Elon Musk’s Terafab: Tesla, SpaceX & xAI Launch AI Chip Project in Texas
Elon Musk announced plans to launch “Terafab,” a new joint venture between Tesla, SpaceX and his artificial intelligence company xAI, dedicated to building custom AI chips. The project will be based in Austin, Texas, Musk stated on social media, according to reports from Bloomberg and The Straits Times.
The initiative comes as Musk expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of xAI, admitting the company “not built right” and requiring a substantial overhaul, as reported by Electrek. This admission follows a $2 billion investment from Tesla into xAI just weeks prior. Musk’s comments coincided with the departure of several key co-founders from xAI, a situation he acknowledged necessitates a “rebuild” of the organization, according to CNBC.
Terafab’s primary goal is to reduce reliance on external chip manufacturers, specifically TSMC, and establish a sovereign chip supply chain, according to Yahoo Finance. Musk has previously voiced concerns about supply chain vulnerabilities and the need for greater control over critical components. The project aims to design and produce chips tailored to the specific needs of Tesla’s autonomous driving technology, SpaceX’s space exploration endeavors, and xAI’s artificial intelligence development.
Musk as well unveiled a joint Tesla-xAI project dubbed “Macrohard,” signaling an intention to disrupt the software industry, Reuters reported. Details regarding Macrohard’s specific objectives remain limited, but We see expected to leverage the capabilities of the chips developed by Terafab.
The launch of Terafab is anticipated to precede a planned initial public offering (IPO) for SpaceX, CNBC reported. Musk indicated that the IPO is contingent upon achieving certain milestones, including the successful establishment of the chip manufacturing facility. No specific timeline for the SpaceX IPO has been announced.
