Elizabeth Pich Teaches Comic Art to Youth in Illingen
Comics now account for roughly ten percent of Germany’s fiction book revenue, fueled by steady growth in classic titles and Japanese manga across all age groups.
Illitera Festival Draws Aspiring Creators to Illingen
That cultural momentum recently brought a group of young artists to an Illingen youth center for a hands-on workshop led by comic artist Elizabeth Pich during the Illitera reading festival. Organized as part of the local literary festival, the session challenged participants to transform random word fragments drawn from two bowls into entirely original characters.
Random Word Fragments Spark Surprising Characters
The unexpected pairings initially produced puzzled expressions across the room. Tamara received an impulsive cucumber that cannot sit still, while Milena drew a helpful, warm-hearted scarecrow. Annkatrin tackled a chaotic ship floating above the floor, and Mats was assigned a cloud that climbs and overthinks.
Young Creators Build Collaborative Chain Stories
Participants first sketched their unconventional subjects as caricatures, establishing distinct visual identities on paper before Pich divided them into groups of three. Working collaboratively, the young creators built chain stories where every character was essential to the shared plot.

Jugendzentrum staff member Domenic Adelmann provided pencils and specialized drawing pens. Meanwhile, youth representative Tamara Gotzmann, intern Emely Platz, and Vilius Roscinas managed hospitality details, setting out drinks, fresh fruit, vegetables, and dips across the creative tables.
Foundations in Professional Illustration
While mastering the pacing, panel arrangement, and structural planning required for professional comic illustration demands sustained practice, the workshop gave two boys and nine girls an introductory foundation. Supported by Pich’s instruction, the group produced imaginative stories, clever cartoons, and original character sketches without creative boundaries.
