Electron Microscopy Careers: A Guide | Nature

March 22, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Paul Midgley, Professor of Materials Science at the University of Cambridge, recently discussed his career trajectory in electron microscopy, a field experiencing robust demand, according to new job postings. The discussion, conducted ahead of his 60th birthday, focused on both the application of the technology to materials science and the ongoing development of new microscopy techniques.

The demand for professionals skilled in electron microscopy is demonstrably high. As of today, March 22, 2026, Indeed.com lists 562 open positions related to electron microscopy, although LinkedIn reports 566 such jobs currently available in the United States. These roles span a variety of sectors, including materials science, energy, and biotechnology.

Several companies are actively recruiting for electron microscopy positions. Lam Research, for example, is seeking a FIB/STEM Electron Microscopist in Fremont, California. Bruker Nano Surfaces & Metrology has an opening for a Product Manager specializing in electron microscopy in Seattle, Washington. Amgen is currently hiring a Scientist – Protein Biochemist in Thousand Oaks, California, a role that utilizes electron microscopy techniques. Other companies with open positions include Thea Energy, NCH, RJ Lee Group, Kanz, Flagship Pioneering, Alfred University, and Eurofins PSS Insourcing Solutions.

The positions available range in seniority and specialization. Openings include research associate roles, laboratory technician positions, and more senior roles such as assistant analytical laboratory manager at Montana Technological University and particle and powder characterization scientist positions at Eurofins. MillenniumSoft Inc. Is also seeking a Materials Scientist.

The Mayo Clinic is currently advertising a Research Technologist position focused on Electron Microscopy Core work in Rochester, Minnesota. The positions listed on LinkedIn and Indeed require varying levels of experience and expertise, indicating a broad need for skilled professionals across the field.

Professor Midgley’s career, as highlighted in the Nature discussion, reflects a dual focus on utilizing electron microscopy for materials understanding and pushing the boundaries of the technology itself. This dual aspect is echoed in the diverse range of roles currently being advertised, suggesting a continued need for both application-focused and development-oriented professionals.
