Eleanor Barnfield died after attack at Bridgend housing complex

Eleanor Barnfield died after attack at Bridgend housing complex

October 22, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Eleanor Barnfield, a 47-year-old care worker from North Cornelly, bled to death from multiple stab wounds on Monday, October 19, after managing to drive her car a short distance following an attack at a sheltered housing complex in Bridgend, Wales. South Wales Police confirmed that a 61-year-old man from Bridgend was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Barnfield Died While Driving to Hospital After Attack

The sequence of events began at 11:25 am on Monday when Barnfield managed to place an emergency call to 999 after being attacked at the Ger-y-Nant sheltered housing complex. The call disconnected before details could be established, and control room staff were unable to reach her when they attempted to call back.

Barnfield, who worked for the social housing provider Valleys to Coast, got into her car and attempted to drive herself the mile and a half to the Princess of Wales Hospital. She succumbed to her injuries en route, losing control of the vehicle just 300 yards away. Her car collided with a wall at approximately 12:43 pm, prompting emergency services to respond to what was initially logged as a road traffic collision.

Police Operation and Arrest at Retirement Complex

Upon arrival at the crash site, paramedics and police officers quickly determined that Barnfield’s wounds were entirely unrelated to the impact with the wall. She was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

While medical personnel treated the victim, other police units descended on the Ger-y-Nant complex, a retirement facility featuring 13 social housing flats for residents over the age of 60. The suspected attacker had barricaded himself inside a room within an apartment block at the site. Armed officers wearing stab-proof vests entered the building through an open window and overpowered the suspect. Residents were evacuated during the operation, with many picked up by family members before the area was cordoned off.

Family and Colleagues Pay Tribute to Barnfield

In a statement released on Wednesday, Barnfield’s grieving family paid tribute, stating: “Mum was the kindest, most loving bravest person in the world. She meant everything to us and will be forever loved and missed deeply by her devoted family and friends. She was our rock.”

Jo Oak, chief executive of Valleys to Coast, expressed the organisation’s shock at the tragedy, stating that Barnfield was a “much-valued member” of their team whose loss is deeply felt by colleagues. Neighbour Sue Thomas, living opposite the residential home, noted the heavy impact on the local community, pointing out the strict security measures now in place at the housing complex.

Ongoing Police Investigation

Chief Superintendent Jason Rees of South Wales Police assured the local community that specialist detectives and staff are actively investigating the circumstances of the attack. Authorities have asked anyone who witnessed the incident or holds relevant information to come forward as inquiries continue around the Ger-y-Nant complex.
