Egypt-Saudi Relations: Tariq Nour Defends Ties Amid Social Media Disputes

Egyptian Media Executive Defends Strong Ties with Saudi Arabia Amid Online discord

Cairo, Egypt – Tariq Nour, Chairman of the United Nations Media Services Company, has publicly reaffirmed the robust relationship between Egypt and saudi Arabia, urging citizens of both nations to disregard divisive campaigns circulating on social media. Nour’s statement, delivered via X (formerly Twitter), comes in response to accusations leveled against him by a Saudi user and aims to quell rising tensions fueled by online misinformation.

Nour expressed surprise at being implicated in efforts to exacerbate friction between the two countries, especially given his long-standing advocacy for stronger regional unity. He emphasized that such accusations, especially when amplified by individuals with a history of anti-Saudi rhetoric, serve only the interests of those seeking to destabilize the alliance.

“The honorable brother, I was surprised by mentioning my name in the context of an accusation that only increases the fire of fire that some of those who are purified seek to ignite between our two brothers,” Nour wrote.”Such signals…only serve the agendas of those who lie in wait for us.”

He further clarified that Egypt faces significant internal challenges demanding focused attention, leaving no room for engagement in “small polemics or rumors.” Nour underscored Egypt’s deep respect and gratitude for Saudi Arabia’s consistent support, stating it is “firmly established in hearts and memory and will not be forgotten.”

This sentiment reflects the historically close diplomatic, economic, and military cooperation between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The two nations share critical strategic interests, including regional security, counter-terrorism efforts, and economic growth. Saudi Arabia has been a key investor in Egypt, providing billions of dollars in aid and investment since the 2013 political transition.

Nour acknowledged the existence of external actors actively working to undermine the relationship, utilizing various tactics to sow discord. He called for vigilance and unity in the face of these efforts, asserting that the bond between Egypt and Saudi Arabia is “arduous to penetrate.”

Addressing claims of wielding undue influence – referencing a comment about a “remote control” – Nour dismissed the notion, reiterating his respect for Saudi leadership and its vision for a unified and prosperous Arab world. He quoted Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s aspiration for “every Arab country be a great state,” aligning his own goals with that vision.

The incident highlights the growing challenge of managing public perception in the digital age, particularly in regions prone to geopolitical tensions. Disinformation campaigns and coordinated online attacks can rapidly escalate into real-world consequences, making proactive interaction and fact-checking crucial for maintaining stability. Nour’s swift and direct response demonstrates a commitment to openness and a determination to safeguard the vital relationship between Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
