Egypt Media Council Bans National Coach Hossam Hassan from Media Appearances

November 5, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Egypt Media Council Bans National Team Coach Hossam Hassan

The Supreme Council for Media Regulation in Egypt officially banned national team head coach Hossam Hassan from appearing in all media outlets governed by the Law on Regulation of the Press and Media. The directive bars the coach from television, print, and digital platforms to enforce regulations protecting personal privacy and private family disputes.

The decree applies to the manager of the Pharaohs starting from the date of the decision’s issuance, according to the official statement issued on Wednesday.

Enforcement Actions Against Digital Platforms

Alongside the direct prohibition targeting the national team manager, the regulatory body summoned legal representatives from several electronic publishing outlets for formal hearings. These proceedings stem from violations of statutory rules governing the private lives of citizens. The council reiterated that its prior ban remains strictly active against Hassan’s former spouse, Dan Adam, forbidding her media appearances across all domestic channels and platforms.

Publishing institutions and digital networks face severe legal penalties for any repeat broadcasts or recycled discussions regarding the personal conflict. The council justified the restrictions by emphasizing the necessity of preserving athletic stability and shielding the coaching staff from external distractions ahead of upcoming competitive fixtures.

Professors Debate Censorship Following Public Figures Privacy Decree

Cairo University media professor Mahmoud Khalil told Al-Sharq Al-Awsat that establishing professional dialogue and enforcing media discipline should take precedence over outright bans. Conversely, media professor Sara Fawzi defended the administrative action, arguing that safeguarding the privacy of public figures prevents the commercial exploitation of domestic disputes.

The decree follows a turbulent period for the national team manager that includes recent legal filings concerning allegations of document falsification and marital status disputes. These off-field controversies coincide with disciplinary scrutiny from international football authorities, compounding the administrative and public relations hurdles facing the team leadership.

Television Broadcast Preceded Supreme Council Media Regulation Decision

Before the ban, Hossam Hassan appeared in various media outlets after the national team returned from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including an episode of the program Maakom hosted by media personality Mona El-Shazly, where he appeared alongside his former wife Dan Adam and his children. This appearance was the final one before the events that triggered the prohibition. Widely circulated videos previously showed a family altercation involving the head coach in the North Coast, followed by statements from Dan Adam in media outlets, prompting the Supreme Council for Media Regulation to issue a ban against her in September of the current year to preserve private life and public morals.

The coach’s media statements concerning several national team players sparked anger within the latest national team training camp during the qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations, specifically prior to the match against Angola. These remarks included comments regarding national team and Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy, whom the coach described as finished, triggering widespread anger across the sports community and leading Al Ahly to issue a statement rejecting the mention of Hossam Hassan’s name in an effort to marginalize and belittle him as he had done with the goalkeeper.

The Egyptian public experienced a major dream with Hossam Hassan at the 2026 World Cup when he led the team to the round of 16, but these aspirations dissolved upon his return from America following Egypt’s elimination from the round of 16 after a defeat against Argentina on July 7, after which Hossam Hassan became surrounded by crises and legal disputes with his former spouse.
