Egypt and Malaysia elevate ties to strategic partnership, TV BRICS reports
Egypt and Malaysia elevated their diplomatic ties to a strategic partnership in October 2026, targeting broad cooperation in trade, technology, and education. TV BRICS reported that the formal upgrade followed a state visit by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to Malaysia, building on an initial framework established by leaders in Cairo in November 2024.
Bilateral Trade Reaches RM3.49 Billion Ahead of New Strategic Accord
Bilateral trade between Egypt and Malaysia surged 74.7% to RM3.49 billion during the first eight months of 2026, according to figures reported by Bernama. In 2025, Egypt ranked as Malaysia’s seventh-largest trading partner in Africa, recording a total bilateral trade value of RM3.08 billion, which included RM2.55 billion in Malaysian exports and RM530 million in imports. Both countries established diplomatic relations on November 10, 1959. During the October 2026 talks, President El-Sisi and Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim agreed to convene the Second Joint Commission Meeting and the Second Round of Bilateral Consultations at the earliest opportunity.
Economic priorities under the upgraded partnership span several high-tech and industrial sectors. The two governments identified agriculture, the halal industry, technical and vocational education and training, digital transformation, renewable energy, infrastructure development, automotive manufacturing, and semiconductors as key areas for business-led collaboration. Both nations highlighted their strategic geographic positions as reciprocal gateways. Egypt provides access to wider Arab and African markets, while Malaysia offers entry into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and broader Asian markets.

Air Connectivity and Educational Exchanges Expand Across Regions
Improved air connectivity serves as a primary enabler for tourism, business travel, and trade under the new agreement. Both leaders encouraged their respective national airlines to explore closer operational cooperation. Educational and human capital ties will also deepen through joint research, student exchanges, scholarships, and technical and scientific programs. Malaysia reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing capacity-building cooperation with Egypt via the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme, alongside collaborative efforts in religious studies and Arabic language instruction.
Regional diplomacy played a prominent role during the state visit. Malaysia formally welcomed Egypt’s proposal to obtain Sectoral Dialogue Partner status with ASEAN, expanding on Egypt’s accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia in 2016. Concurrently, Malaysia reiterated its aspiration to join the BRICS group, expressing its intention to work closely with Egypt and other member states to advance the agenda of the Global South. Collaborative pledges were upheld across multiple multilateral entities, including the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Group of 77, and the D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation.
Regional Security and Diplomatic Coordination in West Asia
Beyond commercial and educational initiatives, the discussions addressed pressing regional security developments. The leaders called for peace, stability, and freedom of navigation in the Gulf and West Asia. They reaffirmed support for a just and lasting resolution of the Palestinian question based on the two-state solution, pre-1967 borders, and East Jerusalem as the capital of an independent Palestinian state.
The discussions emphasized the urgent need for unimpeded humanitarian aid delivery to the Gaza Strip while categorically rejecting the displacement of the Palestinian population. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed appreciation for Egypt’s role in addressing the Gaza crisis and facilitating aid access. Furthermore, both governments underscored the necessity of executing United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803 (2025), preserving ongoing backing for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, and reinstating the governing authority of the Palestinian Authority over Gaza.

President El-Sisi concluded his visit by extending an official invitation to King Sultan Ibrahim of Malaysia to visit Egypt.
