This evening, we welcome Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City squad for the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
we are well aware of the exceptional qualities within City’s ranks, having recently faced them in the Premier League in late November.Achieving a positive result against Pep’s teams demands reaching your absolute peak performance, as we demonstrated that day, and we must replicate that level of play tonight.
our recent FA Cup match against Bournemouth mirrored the dramatic nature of our previous game against Leeds United. We began strongly, creating numerous opportunities but struggling to convert them into goals. When Bournemouth threatened, our collective defensive efforts were strong, and we were disappointed not to have a greater advantage at halftime.
The second half began equally promisingly, and we took the lead shortly after through a goal from Harvey barnes.
Bournemouth consistently poses a threat on the counter-attack and quickly equalized. Shortly after, they surprisingly took the lead.
This presented a meaningful test of our character, and the players responded admirably.
We remained composed, patiently awaited our opportunity, and equalized with a late penalty converted by Anthony Gordon.
While an additional 30 minutes wasn’t ideal given our demanding schedule, it was a crucial goal at that moment. And with almost the last kick of extra time, another late goal from Harvey Barnes appeared to secure victory.
Though, no game is truly over until the final whistle. In the dying seconds,Bournemouth scored to force a penalty shootout.
Once again, our character was questioned after conceding so late, and once again, the players delivered a perfect response.
It took seven penalties to determine the winner, and we were indebted to Aaron Ramsdale, whose three saves ultimately secured our place in the fourth round of the competition.
These were two amazing matches, building momentum and showcasing a dressing room full of character, collectively persistent to achieve success for the club and never surrender.
These are positive signs, and qualities we will need to consistently demonstrate as we compete across four competitions. It’s a substantial challenge for the entire squad and coaching staff, but one we wholeheartedly embrace.
Thank you for your unwavering support against Bournemouth, creating an habitat where we could find a way to win. We will need the same level of support tonight as we strive to take a step closer to returning to Wembley and achieving further success in a competition we cherish.
