Ed Orgeron Expresses Strong Interest in LSU Head coaching Vacancy
BATON ROUGE, LA – Former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron has publicly stated his desire to return to lead the Tigers football program.Speaking on ESPNS Unsportsmanlike on Wednesday, Orgeron emphatically said, “I’d love to,” when asked directly about the possibility, adding, “Are you kidding me? I just gotta get in my truck, I’ll be there today!”
The opening comes following the recent firing of Brian Kelly after a loss to Texas A&M, creating a high-profile vacancy at LSU. Orgeron previously coached the Tigers from 2016-2021, achieving a 51-20 overall record, including an undefeated 15-0 season and a College Football Playoff National Championship in 2019. The unexpected availability of the LSU position has quickly positioned it as one of the most coveted jobs in college football.
During his tenure, Orgeron’s 2019 team, led by heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow, is widely considered one of the greatest in college football history. His first four seasons saw a 40-9 record, but his final two seasons resulted in an 11-11 mark, leading to his departure before the 2021 Texas Bowl.
Orgeron has previously indicated openness to coaching roles beyond a head coaching position, telling On3’s Andy Staples, “It may be a head coach job. It may be a defensive line job with someone that I believe can win a championship.” he emphasized his desire for a strong fit, stating, “I want them to want me as much as I want them. I’m a championship coach, and I’m going to bring a winning program to their university.”
The coach’s familiarity with the culture of Baton Rouge and proven success with the program have fueled speculation about a potential return.as LSU begins it’s search for a new leader, Orgeron has made it clear he is a highly interested candidate.
