Ecolo Co-Chairs Marie Lecocq and Samuel Cogolati Resign Amidst Internal Disagreements
Brussels, Belgium – In a meaningful development for Belgian politics, marie Lecocq and Samuel cogolati have jointly announced their resignation as co-chairs of ecolo, the Green party. The decision, revealed on Wednesday, comes after less than a year in their leadership roles, stemming from fundamental disagreements over the party’s future direction.
“We collectively return our mandate,” Lecocq stated, speaking on behalf of both herself and Cogolati. According to reports from Bruzz, the pair’s differing visions for Ecolo proved insurmountable.
The party now faces a period of internal deliberation, with the decision on how to proceed resting with its members. Recent weeks have seen escalating tensions at the leadership level, prompting the appointment of a mediator in an attempt to resolve the conflict.
“This situation is causing enormous damage to the party. It has gone on long enough,” lecocq explained. She further revealed that Cogolati initiated the discussion about stepping down on Monday. “I regret it. But we have taken this commitment in pairs. I now announce that I will hand over my resignation to the militants. It is normal that we now turn to them.”
Lecocq acknowledged shared duty for the outcome, expressing regret that their tenure was cut short. “We still had some great things to do.”
Ecolo, a prominent force in Belgian environmental politics, will now navigate a leadership transition as it seeks to unify behind a new direction.
