jamie Borthwick has been dropped from his long-running role on EastEnders after 19 years, following a suspension prompted by unacceptable language used on the set of Strictly Come Dancing. The BBC has confirmed the actor will not be returning to the soap, effectively ending his tenure as Jay Brown (formerly Mitchell).
Borthwick’s dismissal follows an internal investigation into his conduct during the 20th anniversary series of strictly, where he was partnered with Michelle Tsiakkas. The BBC stated in June that his language was “entirely unacceptable and in no way reflects the values or standards we hold and expect.” He had previously apologized for “any offense and upset” caused. The decision impacts both Borthwick’s career and the future storylines of the popular soap, leaving a meaningful gap in its long-serving cast.
The actor joined EastEnders in 2006 and became one of the show’s longest-serving cast members. He won a British soap Award for best dramatic performance from a young actor and an Inside Soap Award for best actor for his portrayal of Jay Brown.
Borthwick’s participation in Strictly marked a return to the ballroom after winning the 2023 Christmas special. He reached Blackpool week, a key milestone in the competition, before being voted off in november as the ninth celebrity eliminated.
Disability charity Scope responded to the initial reports of Borthwick’s language, urging him to ”reflect on what he said and educate himself,” and to “get to know the reality of disabled people’s lives,” according to media manager Warren Kirwan. The Mirror reported Borthwick was originally scheduled to resume filming this month after his suspension, but those plans have now been cancelled. BBC News has contacted Borthwick’s representatives for comment.
