Ear Seeding: The Trending Wellness Practice Explained

March 24, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

A growing number of individuals are turning to ear seeds – small beads affixed to specific points on the ear – as a potential remedy for a range of ailments, from chronic pain to anxiety. The practice, rooted in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is gaining traction in wellness circles, though scientific evidence supporting its efficacy remains limited.

Ear seeds are a form of auriculotherapy, which centers on the principle that the ear is a microsystem reflecting the entire body. According to TCM, health is dependent on the smooth flow of qi, or energy, along invisible pathways called meridians. These meridians, it is believed, run throughout the body, including the ears. By placing seeds – traditionally from the Vaccaria plant, but increasingly stainless steel balls – on specific points along these meridians, practitioners aim to clear blockages and restore the flow of qi, thereby alleviating associated health issues.

Acupuncturist Thuy Kim Nguyen explains that ear seeds target acupuncture points without the use of needles. While anecdotal reports suggest benefits for conditions like chronic lower back pain, insomnia, depression, anxiety, stress, infertility, migraines and even addiction and weight loss, rigorous scientific validation is still lacking. Some individuals use ear seeds as a standalone treatment, while others incorporate them between professional acupuncture or acupressure sessions.

Recent research offers a glimmer of potential. A 2023 study examined the use of ear seeds in patients experiencing persistent low back pain following spinal surgery. The study, involving 56 participants randomly assigned to different groups, suggests a possible benefit, though further investigation is needed. However, the overall body of high-quality research remains small.

The practice’s increasing popularity has led to a shift in materials used. While traditional practitioners favored seeds from the Vaccaria plant, modern practitioners often opt for stainless steel balls due to their hypoallergenic properties and discreet appearance. The core principle, however, remains consistent: stimulating specific points on the ear to influence corresponding areas of the body.
