EA Releases 25 Classic PC Games on Steam, Wing Commander, Ultima
Electronic Arts has released 25 classic PC titles onto Steam, bringing a bulk of historical games from developers like Origin Systems to a new platform alongside contemporaneous launches on GOG and the EA App, Eurogamer.de reported. The release encompasses productions dating from 1981 to the end of the 1990s, with the vast majority originating from developer studio Origin Systems. Seven of the titles arrived as technically restored anniversary editions, while 18 further works were provided as faithful ports. Regular prices stand at 9.99 US dollars for the anniversary editions and 4.99 US dollars for the other classics, while in Australia the recommended retail prices are 14.95 AUD and 7.95 AUD respectively.
Teams Restore Thousands of Video Scenes from Physical Archives
Seven of the titles arrive as technically updated anniversary editions, led by Senior Producer Jim Vessella, who previously directed the Command & Conquer Remastered Collection. According to Eurogamer.de, the project took inspiration from the discovery of physical media archives containing thousands of Betacam, VHS, and D1 tapes. Digitalization of these master-FMV-sequences allowed teams to restore more than 1,500 full-motion video scenes across seven games. For Wing Commander III alone, workers digitized over 600 historical magnetic tapes to recover approximately 475 full-screen cinematic clips and 460 in-game radio scenes.
Developers Integrate Community Patches and Licensed Soundtracks into Releases
The releases integrate third-party community patches into the official builds, according to Eurogamer.de. Modder Matt Wells contributed code enabling 60 frames-per-second support and gamepad compatibility for Wing Commander III, while Wing Commander I and II incorporate community solutions such as Kilrathi Saga, Wcdx, and WCAT. GOG collaborated directly on Wing Commander Prophecy, assisting with controller integration and upscaled video sequences. Road Rash includes a newly licensed original soundtrack featuring tracks from bands like Soundgarden and Paw, paired with cloud-save support.
Digital Storefronts Offer Launch Discounts and Free Platform Upgrades
Steam and GOG are running a 50 percent launch discount from November 5 through November 19, dropping anniversary editions to 4.99 US dollars and standard classics to 2.49 US dollars. Bundles see a 55 percent reduction during the same window, pricing the nine-game Wing Commander collection at 33.66 US dollars and the eleven-game Ultima set at 24.64 US dollars. Digital owners of prior Wing Commander releases on GOG or the EA App receive platform upgrades to the anniversary editions at no additional charge. The original versions remain in the GOG Preservation Program, into which Prophecy was newly inducted.
