Dustin Hoffman will join Adam Sandler in the upcoming Netflix film Time Out, a remake of the 2001 French drama L’Emploi Du Temps, according to multiple reports. Production is slated to initiate in Vancouver this April.
Sandler will star as Vincent, a man who, after losing his job, pretends to continue going to function to avoid telling his family. As the deception continues, he becomes entangled in a web of lies and questionable financial dealings to maintain his family’s lifestyle. Hoffman is expected to portray Vincent’s father, a pivotal paternal role in the film.
The project marks a reunion for Sandler and Hoffman, who previously collaborated on Noah Baumbach’s 2017 film, The Meyerowitz Stories. Scott Cooper, known for directing films like Hostiles, wrote the screenplay and will also direct Time Out. Cooper originally developed the project with Christian Bale attached to play the lead role, but Bale later departed and Sandler took over.
Time Out is being produced by veteran producer Jon Kilik. Sandler recently starred in two Netflix films, Happy Gilmore 2 and Jay Kelly, with the latter earning him a Golden Globe nomination. Hoffman, a two-time Academy Award winner for his roles in Kramer vs. Kramer and Rain Man, most recently appeared in Tuner, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival last summer.
The film is expected to explore themes of identity, social expectations, and the pressures of maintaining appearances within a community. The original French film, directed by Laurent Cantet, focused on the psychological toll of unemployment and the lengths to which one man would go to preserve a facade of normalcy.
Filming in Vancouver is scheduled to run from March 31, 2026, through May 30, 2026.
