Dustin Byfuglien Returns to Winnipeg for Emotional Heritage Classic Goodbye

October 27, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Longtime Winnipeg Jets defenceman Dustin Byfuglien returned to the city ahead of the 2026 Heritage Classic to skate in an alumni game against former Montreal Canadiens players, describing the weekend as a goodbye he and the fanbase never truly experienced when his playing career ended abruptly in 2019. A statement was released by the Jets on Monday expressing gratitude for the closure.

Byfuglien Ends NHL Career Without Formal Farewell

Byfuglien played nine seasons for the Jets organization, including one year in Atlanta before the franchise relocated, earning all four of his career all-star selections in Winnipeg. His tenure ended ahead of the 2019-20 season when the team granted him an indefinite personal leave of absence. He subsequently underwent season-ending surgery and agreed to terminate his contract in April 2020, concluding a 14-year NHL career without a formal farewell on the ice.

“The way our chapter in Winnipeg ended wasn’t how any of us imagined it would,” Byfuglien said in his statement published by the Jets. “There were a lot of emotions, a lot left unsaid, and a goodbye that never really happened. For years, I’ve carried a little sadness about that. Not because of the hockey, but because of the people.”

A message from Emily, Dustin, and the Byfuglien family to you, Winnipeg 💙I’ve been trying to find the right words to describe what this weekend meant to our family, and I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to do it justice.Winnipeg, you gave us something this weekend that I didn’t… pic.twitter.com/oavgEZqfIi

Before Josh Morrissey surpassed him in March 2026 by securing his 417th point, Byfuglien held the franchise record for the most points scored by a defenceman. During Sunday’s alumni festivities surrounding the 2026 Heritage Classic, Byfuglien received a video tribute followed by a prolonged ovation from the Winnipeg crowd.

Fanfare Outside Princess Auto Stadium

CBC reported that the atmosphere outside Winnipeg’s Princess Auto Stadium featured thousands of fans gathering early for the 6 p.m. puck drop between the Jets and Canadiens. Alongside standard fan activities, Byfuglien handed out coffee and signed autographs from a Tim Horton’s truck during the Fan Fest event.

“It was a lot of fun, you know, get back see a lot of old friends, a lot of friends here in Winnipeg still,” Byfuglien told CBC. Fans like Patricia Nolin secured autographs on vintage jerseys, while visitors from out of town highlighted the economic impact of the outdoor showcase. “I was at The Forks the other day, and got a chance to talk to a lot of tourists that were coming in for this. So just knowing that it brings in a whole bunch of revenue for the city as well, it’s awesome,” attendee Donavon Carriere told CBC.

Focus on the Ice and the Rink

The most impressive looks, though, were the goalie gear worn by both Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler. Their masks were once again very well done and painted by the talented Sylvie Marsolais from Sylabrush. That’s simply the way things go, even though only a single netminder actually got to display his equipment during the match. Designed as a tribute to Ken Dryden and Jose Theodore—the initial goaltender to sport a toque over his mask in an outdoor fixture—Dobes’s mask was striking and coordinated with his beige, red, and blue pads and helmet. You could really tell the top part was a toque. Displayed on Fowler’s equipment were his moniker written in the exact same lettering featured on the Heritage Classic sweaters, alongside the event’s Canadiens emblem and the squad’s alternate name.

For Byfuglien, the weekend ultimately provided a resolution to years of lingering emotional distance from the franchise. “I know the ending was complicated,” Byfuglien said. “We finally got to feel the goodbye we missed, and it was more beautiful than I could have imagined.”
