Dunedin Street Light Failure Leaves Suburbs in Dark
Several suburbs in Dunedin were plunged into darkness on Wednesday evening after a mass failure of the city’s street lighting system.
The outages affected multiple residential areas, including St Kilda, South Dunedin, Corstorphine, Carisbrook, and Andersons Bay. The disruptions occurred in two distinct phases throughout the evening of April 8. According to Aurora Energy, the initial failure began at approximately 6:50 p.m. And lasted until 8:10 p.m.
Aurora Energy attributed the first blackout to a malfunction in its ripple injection system. This technology utilizes coded signals transmitted over power lines to automatically trigger the activation and deactivation of streetlight groups during dusk and dawn.
A second, separate outage occurred shortly after 9:00 p.m., with lighting returning to normal around 9:30 p.m. Aurora Energy stated that this subsequent failure was caused by a different issue and dispatched a fault response crew to investigate the cause.
The Dunedin City Council confirmed it was aware of the outages and worked with providers to investigate the system failures. Council representatives noted that affected lights were returning to normal operation as the evening progressed.
Aurora Energy clarified that the malfunctions were limited to the street lighting infrastructure and did not impact the electricity supply to residential or commercial customers. The company issued an apology for the inconvenience, noting that the failure was particularly impactful as evenings have become darker following the conclusion of daylight saving time.
On social media, some local residents responded to the blackout with humor, with some questioning if the council had failed to pay its utility bills.
A fault response crew remains tasked with investigating the cause of the second outage.
