Duke Dominates California 45-21 ⁤in Offensive Showcase

DURHAM, N.C. - ‌ Duke’s offense proved unstoppable Saturday, ‌powering the Blue Devils⁣ to a decisive 45-21 victory over California at Brooks‌ Field at Wallace Wade Stadium. Quarterback Grayson Mensah orchestrated a high-octane attack, leading ⁢Duke to a commanding lead and ‍ultimately securing their fourth win of the season.

The victory marks a important⁤ step for Duke (4-2, 1-1), demonstrating ⁢their offensive capabilities against⁣ a traditionally strong pac-12 opponent. For California (4-2, 1-1), the loss represents a setback in their season, highlighting inconsistencies‌ that head coach Justin Wilcox acknowledged need addressing. The Bears will look‍ to rebound next week, while Duke prepares for a challenging matchup against No. 17 Georgia Tech.

Mensah finished the game with a stellar performance, directing‌ four consecutive ⁣scoring drives after falling behind 14-0 early in the first quarter.⁤ Duke quickly seized control, scoring three touchdowns in a six-minute ⁢span⁢ during the second ⁢quarter.Running back Jordan Castle found the end zone twice on short runs, and Mensah connected with ‌Jalon⁢ Brown for a 26-yard touchdown. A late first-half field goal from Todd Pelino, a 25-yarder as time expired, extended Duke’s advantage.

The Blue Devils continued their offensive surge in the second half, with ⁢Mensah finding Cooper Barkate ⁢for‌ a⁢ 10-yard touchdown pass. Duke’s defense complemented the offense, intercepting California quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutete three times and recording six sacks.

Sagapolutete,a true freshman, completed 245 passing yards ‌with one touchdown, but struggled with turnovers. “The team’s gotta grow ⁢up,” Wilcox stated after the game. “We have glimpses where we can play good football but its too much of a roller coaster.”

Duke’s up-tempo offense overwhelmed‌ the california ⁢defense, which had previously allowed an average of just 18 points per⁣ game. While Sagapolutete’s poise as a ⁤freshman remains ⁣a bright⁢ spot for the Bears, their inability to establish a consistent running game ‍allowed Duke to focus on containing the passing‍ attack.

Duke will host No. 17 Georgia Tech on‌ November 15. California returns home to face North Carolina‍ on October 17.
