Dubai Airport: Aircraft Damaged in Iran-Linked Attacks – Aviation Risks Rise
Strikes damaged two commercial aircraft – an Emirates Airbus A380 and a Saudia Airbus A321 – at Dubai International Airport, highlighting the escalating risks to civilian air travel amid regional tensions, reports indicate.
The incidents occurred early in the ongoing conflict, with the Emirates A380 sustaining damage during an Iranian-linked drone attack, according to reports. The Saudia A321 was also impacted. No commercial airliners have been shot down since the conflict began, but several parked aircraft have suffered damage from attacks or debris from intercepted projectiles.
Beyond the damage at Dubai International Airport, shrapnel from missiles struck Ben Gurion Airport last week, damaging three private planes. These incidents underscore the vulnerability of major aviation hubs in the region despite continued commercial flight operations.
In response to the heightened threat, the United Arab Emirates has implemented specific flight corridors for pilots and prepared air traffic controllers to rapidly divert aircraft if necessary. Fighter jets have also been deployed to provide protection for jetliners against incoming drones, sources familiar with the strategy have confirmed.
The recent escalation follows a joint U.S.-Israel offensive against Iran on February 28, resulting in over 1,300 casualties, including the death of then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting U.S. Military assets, causing casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to global markets and aviation.
The attacks have led to widespread flight cancellations. More than 60 key flights were canceled at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, leaving passengers stranded and disrupting travel to destinations including Dubai, Doha, India, and Europe, according to reports.
Despite the disruptions, flights continue to operate in the region, though with increased vigilance and altered routes. The UAE’s measures to protect airliners demonstrate a proactive approach to mitigating the risks posed by the ongoing conflict.
