According to court proceedings covered by the Associated Press and NBC News, the first criminal conviction in a cold case that has gripped hip-hop fans for decades.
The Prosecution’s Case and Trial Proceedings
The trial in Clark County District Court at the Regional Justice Center featured testimony from 24 prosecution witnesses and three defense witnesses. According to Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal, Davis acquired a weapon and went looking for Shakur and Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight following an altercation involving Davis’s nephew earlier that evening on September 7, 1996.
Prosecutors argued that Davis’s own public statements over the years established his presence inside the white Cadillac from which the fatal shots were fired at a Las Vegas red light. Under Nevada law, an individual who assists or promotes the commission of a murder can be held criminally liable. Palal emphasized to jurors during closing arguments that the core narrative provided by Davis consistently placed him in the vehicle, acting in retaliation.
The defense countered the state’s reliance on historical statements. Defense attorney Michael Sanft challenged the panel of 16 jurors—which included four alternates—to locate independent physical evidence, such as surveillance footage or phone records, proving Davis was in Las Vegas on the night of the shooting. Sanft argued that the state lacked direct physical corroboration placing his client inside the vehicle.
Decades of Investigation and Legal Aftermath
Tupac Shakur was critically wounded during the September 1996 shooting and succumbed to his injuries six days later at the age of 25. While Marion “Suge” Knight survived the attack, the investigation stalled for decades due to a lack of cooperating witnesses and physical evidence. The case shifted dramatically only after Davis began discussing his involvement publicly in media interviews and a memoir, admitting he provided the firearm to individuals in the backseat of the vehicle.
With this verdict, Davis stands as the sole surviving individual among the four men identified by investigators as occupants of the white Cadillac. The other individuals present during the incident, as well as the person who allegedly supplied the initial firearm to Davis, are deceased.
Sentencing and the Final Legal Resolution
Following three hours of jury deliberations, the panel delivered the guilty verdict on a single count of murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further, or assist a criminal gang. Davis now faces a potential sentence of life in prison.
