PLYMOUTH, UK – The final member of a sophisticated drug smuggling operation foiled by a dramatic 28-mile sea chase has been sentenced, bringing an end to a case that saw authorities intercept a important cocaine shipment. James Fowlie, described as a “fixer” by investigators, was today jailed, joining his co-conspirators behind bars for their roles in attempting to import the illegal drug.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts of the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Border Force to disrupt transnational criminal networks targeting the UK. Last year alone, authorities arrested 34 individuals and seized nearly five tonnes of cocaine, preventing the drug from reaching communities and causing harm. The sentences handed down in this case serve as a stark warning to those involved in similar activities, demonstrating the severe consequences of attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the country.

Fowlie purchased the boat intended for the cocaine collection and, after the initial attempt was thwarted by law enforcement, actively sought new crew members to continue the operation. He was sentenced to 15 years and four months in prison. His accomplices, and Pearce, received sentences of 19 years, 21 years and eight months, and 15 years and four months respectively.

“Fowlie’s claim that collecting drugs at sea is a no-risk crime couldn’t be further from the truth,” said NCA Senior Investigating Officer Barry Vinall. “border Force and the national Crime Agency are tackling this issue wiht determination.”

During the pursuit, the suspects attempted to discard evidence, but Border Force officers successfully maintained the chase and secured the vessel. “It is the job of Border Force to protect our border and keep communities safe,” stated Senior Director of border Force Maritime, Duncan Capps. “Our officers were fantastic and displayed astonishing skill…border Force will continue to work alongside the NCA to prevent perilous drugs reaching our streets and will ensure criminals caught smuggling face the full force of the law.”
