A multistate outbreak of extensively drug-resistant Salmonella infections has been linked to moringa powder capsules sold under the Rosabella brand, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday.
As of February 13, seven cases have been identified across seven states, with three individuals requiring hospitalization. No deaths have been reported, according to the CDC.
The affected capsules are manufactured by Ambrosia Brands LLC and are distributed in white plastic bottles featuring a green label. They are primarily sold online through the company’s website, as well as major e-commerce platforms including Amazon, eBay, TikTok Shop, and Shein.
Ambrosia Brands LLC has initiated a recall encompassing 52 lot codes, all with expiration dates in 2027. Consumers can locate the lot code on the bottom of the capsule bottles, positioned above the expiration date. A comprehensive list of recalled lot codes is available on the Food and Drug Administration’s website.
The CDC advises consumers to discard any affected capsules immediately, either by throwing them away or returning them to the point of purchase. Thorough cleaning of any surfaces or items that may have come into contact with the capsules is also recommended.
Individuals experiencing severe symptoms, such as high fever, dehydration, diarrhea, or vomiting, are urged to seek medical attention. The CDC notes that most Salmonella infections resolve without the need for antibiotics.
However, the Salmonella strain associated with this outbreak exhibits resistance to commonly prescribed antibiotics, including first-line and alternative treatments. The agency’s advisory indicates potential resistance to multiple beta-lactam antibiotics, such as meropenem and other carbapenems.
The CDC recommends that antibiotic treatment, when necessary, be guided by antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Consultation with an infectious disease specialist may be warranted in complex or extensively drug-resistant cases.
This outbreak is separate from a previously announced Salmonella investigation in January, which also involved dietary supplements containing moringa leaf powder. The CDC has stated the two outbreaks are unrelated.
