DRM & Plastic Waste: A Surprising Connection

March 20, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) retracted a blog post published on March 13, 2026, alleging a connection between Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) and plastic waste. The retraction followed the discovery of “several factual errors” within the original article, according to a notice posted on the FSF website.

The initial post argued that DRM-locked printer ink cartridges contribute to plastic waste, and that removing these restrictions could promote a more circular economy. The FSF’s retraction does not detail the specific errors, but acknowledges the mistake and offers an apology.

The issue of DRM and its environmental impact has gained attention recently, with the World Today Journal publishing an article highlighting how DRM on ink cartridges leads to increased plastic waste and the use of hazardous materials. The article points to the long decomposition time of plastic cartridge components and advocates for eliminating DRM to reduce this waste stream. Los Angeles recently enacted a ban related to this issue.

Beyond ink cartridges, DRM’s broader implications for waste are being examined. DRM Waste Management, a commercial waste management company, promotes its “DRM Acuity™” process as a solution for environmentally responsible waste programs and sustainable recycling initiatives. The company emphasizes its long-term client relationships and use of proprietary technology for waste stream analysis.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates the handling of used drums and containers that previously held hazardous materials. Regulations, outlined in Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations Section 261.7, address ensuring containers are sufficiently empty before being shipped for reconditioning. Drum reconditioning facilities utilize processes like burning off residuals and washing containers with caustic solutions to prepare them for reuse, offering economic and environmental benefits compared to landfill disposal or creating new containers.
