Latvian Court Upholds Ruling in Deadly Crosswalk Case

Two drivers have been found guilty in connection with a tragic incident where a pedestrian died after being struck by two vehicles in succession. The Latgale Regional Court’s verdict was recently upheld by the Supreme Court, concluding a legal battle that began in November 2021.

Initial Impact and Subsequent Fatality

According to the case details, the first driver failed to pay adequate attention to the traffic conditions and did not slow down or stop before reaching an unmarked pedestrian crossing. As a result, the driver struck a pedestrian, inflicting serious injuries.

Subsequently, a second driver, traveling along the same road segment, did not observe the injured pedestrian lying in the roadway and drove over her. This second impact further exacerbated the pedestrian’s injuries, leading to her death.

The Riga City Court initially handed down a sentence of two years imprisonment to both drivers, suspended with a probationary period. Furthermore, both individuals received a three-year ban from driving.

Traffic fatalities involving pedestrians continue to be a major concern globally. According to the World Health Organization, pedestrians account for 20% of all road traffic deaths worldwide, highlighting the need for improved road safety measures and increased awareness among drivers (WHO, 2023).

Compensation for the Victim’s Family

In addition to the criminal sentences, the court ordered financial compensation to the victim’s daughter. The first driver was ordered to pay 9,000 euros, while the second driver was directed to pay 11,000 euros.

With the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the original verdict, the legal proceedings in this case have now been concluded, bringing a measure of closure to the victim’s family.
