DREES data: French psychiatric inpatient beds dropped by 300 in 2025

DREES data: French psychiatric inpatient beds dropped by 300 in 2025

November 4, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

French psychiatric care continued its multi-year shift away from traditional inpatient facilities throughout 2025, closing approximately 300 full-time hospital beds while expanding partial hospitalization and ambulatory capacity, according to data published by the Direction de la recherche, des études, de l’évaluation et des statistiques (Drees).

    Key Clinical Takeaways:

  • France's public and private hospital system included 1,328 public hospitals, 649 private non-profit facilities, and 980 private clinics as of December 31, 2025.
  • Psychiatric inpatient capacity dropped by roughly 300 full-time beds in 2025, with about 250 of those closures occurring within the public sector.
  • Partial hospitalization spaces in psychiatry grew modestly by 0.3% in 2025, reaching 30,197 day places and representing nearly a third of all national day-care capacity.

Public Sector Bed Reductions Driven by Staffing Shortages

The steady erosion of full-time psychiatric beds contrasts with a slight rebound in medicine, obstetrics, and surgery wards across French hospitals, which added 500 beds. In psychiatry, public institutions accounted for 250 of the 300 total full-time inpatient beds shuttered during the year. According to the data, these reductions stem primarily from structural difficulties in recruiting medical specialists and specialized nursing staff rather than a drop in community need, forcing facilities to freeze available capacity.

Overall hospital capacity across France’s 2,957 health establishments remained distributed among 365,100 full-time beds, 94,200 partial hospitalization spaces, and home-based care for 26,900 simultaneous patients at the close of 2025. While general hospital beds saw a moderate overall decline of 0.6%—matching the pace set in 2024 and slowing from a 1.2% drop in 2023—psychiatry maintained a near-flat trajectory for overall capacity, posting a 0.3% increase in places following a 0.2% dip the previous year.

French Day-Care Healthcare Structures Grew in 2025

Day-care structures across the broader French healthcare system grew by 3.5% in 2025, heavily driven by medium-stay care up 6.5% and short-stay care up 4.4%. Psychiatry progressed at a more measured pace in comparison. Having established day-care models decades earlier, psychiatric care accounts for 30,197 day places, representing roughly 32% of all national day hospitalization capacity. Private clinics contributed an additional 200 places to the psychiatric sector, mirroring their expansion rate from 2024 and offsetting some public sector contractions.

The hospital sector experienced a stabilization in total facility counts over the preceding dozen years, pointing to ongoing administrative concentration and restructuring.
