Pittsburgh CLO and Pittsburgh Public Theater are merging to form Confluence Theater of Pittsburgh, combining over 130 years of local theatrical history into a single organization led by Dr. Brett Ashley Crawford and Kyle Haden, following a public naming poll that drew more than 3,000 submissions.
Merging Legacies
Pittsburgh CLO has anchored musical theater in the region since its 1946 founding, an initiative originally established to aid community rebuilding after World War II, according to reporting by BroadwayWorld. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh Public Theater has staged classical and contemporary works since 1974, earning distinction as one of the earliest companies to produce August Wilson’s complete Century Cycle.
The consolidation follows a completed Plan of Affiliation approved by the boards of both organizations. Following this administrative alignment, the entities launched a public naming poll on July 31, 2026. Out of more than 3,000 submissions, the title “Confluence” emerged as the frontrunner, drawing inspiration from Pittsburgh’s geographic identity where downtown rivers converge into a single current. According to BroadwayWorld, the newly combined organization will be driven by four core principles categorized under the acronym M.A.D.E.: Meaningful, Artistically Excellent, Data-led, and Equitable.
Leadership Structure and Strategic Vision
Administrative and creative duties for the newly formed Confluence Theater of Pittsburgh are split between designated interim executives. Dr. Brett Ashley Crawford steps in as Interim President and Executive Producer, while Kyle Haden assumes the role of Interim Artistic Director. Their mandate involves pooling audiences, administrative staff, financial strategies, and artistic expertise to sustain operations without compromising theatrical standards.
