Dorian Godon Wins Stage 1 & Leads 2026 Volta a Catalunya
Dorian Godon of Ineos Grenadiers claimed the first stage victory of the 105th Volta Ciclista a Catalunya on Monday, March 23, 2026, finishing ahead of Remco Evenepoel of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe and Tom Pidcock of Pinarello-Q36.5 Pro Cycling in Sant Feliu de Guíxols. The French national champion completed the 172.7-kilometer route in a time that secured him the overall race lead.
The opening stage featured climbs of the Alt de Romanyà and Alt de Sant Hilari Sacalm, setting the stage for a challenging finale on the Tossa de Mar road and the Carretera de Girona. A breakaway group consisting of Baptiste Veistroffer (Lotto-Intermarché), Hugo Aznar (Equipo Kern Pharma), Unai Aznar (Euskaltel-Euskadi), and Josh Burnett (Modern Adventure Pro Cycling) attempted to establish a significant lead, but were kept on a tight leash by the peloton, never exceeding a four-minute advantage.
Burnett launched a solo attack in the closing kilometers, briefly threatening to disrupt the anticipated sprint finish. However, UAE Team Emirates-XRG initiated a strong chase, reining in the lone attacker 11 kilometers from the finish line. The intensified pace set by UAE Team Emirates ultimately led to the fragmentation of the peloton and positioned the key contenders for the stage win.
As the race approached the final kilometer, Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma-Lease en Bike) attempted to control the pace, but Godon launched a powerful sprint that proved decisive. The Ineos Grenadiers rider edged out Evenepoel and Pidcock, securing both the stage win and the coveted yellow jersey. According to the official race website, Veistroffer was awarded the prize for the most combative rider of the day.
Dorian Godon, now in his tenth season as a professional cyclist, previously secured the French national road race championship in June 2025. His palmarès also includes victories at Brabantse Pijl and Giro del Veneto in 2023, as well as two triumphs at Paris-Camembert, according to Ineos Grenadiers team information. He joined Ineos Grenadiers in 2026.
The Volta a Catalunya continues on Tuesday, March 24, with a 167.4-kilometer second stage from Figueres to Banyoles, offering opportunities for sprinters.
