Donyell Malen asserts Roma can achieve something special

Donyell Malen asserts Roma can achieve something special

October 11, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Donyell Malen leads the Serie A scoring chart with six goals and asserts that AS Roma can achieve something special this season, fotmob.com reported. Roma shares the top of the table with Inter after collecting 13 points from their opening five matches, heading into a Sunday fixture against surprise Scudetto contenders Como at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.

Malen Revives Career Under Gasperini in the Italian Capital

Malen arrived in Rome last January after choosing to leave Aston Villa in search of regular playing time. In his interview with the Corriere dello Sport, the Dutch forward explained that the decision was driven by a desire to feel important and contribute on the pitch every week. Since making his Serie A debut on January 18, 2026, Malen has scored 20 goals in 23 appearances, making him the top scorer across the five major European leagues.

Manager Gian Piero Gasperini has overseen much of that resurgence. Gasperini currently stands at 299 career victories in Serie A, leaving him on the verge of joining an elite group of managers with 300 wins in the competition, alongside Giovanni Trapattoni, Massimiliano Allegri, Luciano Spalletti, and Nereo Rocco. Malen praised the tactical identity instilled by the 68-year-old coach, noting that the squad’s collective solidity has created an immediate sense of belief within the dressing room.

Statistical Contrast and Historical Context at the Sinigaglia

Historical fixtures between the two sides highlight Como’s recent strength at home against Roma, where they have won their last three Serie A matches by scoring two goals in each encounter. That run equals their victory total from their first 11 home matches against the Giallorossi in the top flight.

Opta predictive data lists Como with a 38.4% probability of victory, compared to 36.1% for Roma and 25.5% for a draw. Roma has secured at least 13 points from five opening matches five times in league history, including the 2014-15 campaign. Kickoff at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia takes place this Sunday.
