Donnie Yen’s John Wick Spin-off: A Martial Arts Masterpiece?
Production on a fresh John Wick spin-off film, centered around Donnie Yen’s character Caine, is slated to begin next month, Lionsgate confirmed this week. The untitled project will observe Yen reprise his role as the blind assassin introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4 and also mark his directorial debut within the franchise.
Yen has publicly stated his ambition for the film, promising it will be “the most definitive martial-arts action film ever made.” The spin-off will follow Caine’s story following the events of the fourth John Wick installment, depicting the assassin navigating life after being freed from his obligations to the High Table.
The screenplay is being penned by Mattson Tomlin, whose recent work includes The Batman Part II and an adaptation of the Keanu Reeves-created comic book BRZRKR. Michael McGrale is also credited as a writer on the project.
Rina Sawayama, who portrayed Akira in John Wick: Chapter 4, is also confirmed to return for the spin-off. The production will also reunite the creative team behind the core John Wick films, including producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road, as well as Chad Stahelski of 87Eleven Entertainment. Keanu Reeves and John Saunders will also serve as producers, with Yen taking on an executive producer role.
The project was initially announced at CinemaCon last spring, but faced a year-long period without confirmed production dates. Yen, known for his work in action films such as Ip Man, Flash Point, and Hero, is expected to bring his signature stunt choreography to the film. His directorial credits include Legend of the Wolf, Ballistic Kiss, and Sakra, with his most recent directorial effort, The Prosecutor, receiving a 94% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Lionsgate has not yet announced a release date for the Caine spin-off.
