March 3, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

A 75-minute docudrama, “Our King Sport – History of Dominican Baseball,” premiered Monday evening at the cinema in Plaza Galería 360 in Santo Domingo, coinciding with the upcoming World Baseball Classic. The film traces the history of baseball in the Dominican Republic from its early 20th-century origins to its current status as a national pastime.

Directed by Miguel Vásquez and produced by Metro Films, the premiere was presented by El Nuevo Diario Films and sponsored by BHD bank, Victoria Yeb, JD Guerrero, PetroMovil, and Grupo Rica. The screening drew attendees from the world of sports, entertainment, and Dominican society.

The documentary features interviews with prominent figures in Dominican baseball, including Ricky Noboa, Tony Piña Cámpora, Tony Grullón, Tuto Mota, Rolando Guante, and Osvaldo Rodríguez Suncar. Additional contributions come from Pedro Briceño, Kevin Cabral, Dionisio Soldevila, Ricardo Rodríguez, José Antonio Mena, Junior Matrillé, Carlos José Lugo, and Félix García Estrella.

“Our King Sport” details the evolution of baseball within the Dominican Republic, examining its growth from informal games played in sugar mills and coastal communities to its current position as a major source of national pride and a pathway to international recognition. The production utilizes dramatic recreations, archival footage, and expert testimony to illustrate this journey.

The film specifically addresses the establishment of the first organized baseball leagues and teams in the Dominican Republic, the sport’s impact on 20th-century social development, and the professionalization of the game. It also chronicles the emergence of Dominican players in Major League Baseball and the country’s rise as a global baseball power.

Beyond its sporting significance, the docudrama emphasizes baseball’s role as a source of hope, discipline, and opportunity for Dominican families, and its integration into the nation’s cultural identity. According to producers, the film is intended for distribution in movie theaters, on television, and through digital platforms.

Plaza Galería 360, the location of the premiere, is a commercial and entertainment complex in Santo Domingo, housing a variety of businesses and recreational facilities, including SportCity, a sporting goods store offering equipment for golf, tennis, soccer, baseball, basketball, volleyball, and fitness, located on the first level. The MLB Dominican Republic office is also located within Plaza Galería 360, at Avenida John F. Kennedy, Edificio Ferretería Americana #401, with contact information available at 809-518-2233.
