DOMi & JD BECK Review: WHO ASKED? Embraces Organized Chaos
DOMi and JD Beck released their sophomore studio album, WHO ASKED?, on Anderson .Paak’s Apeshit label distributed via Blue Note.
From Technical Showcase to Complex Composition
Emerging in the early 2020s with high-profile co-signs from Herbie Hancock, Snoop Dogg, and Anderson .Paak, DOMi & JD Beck built an early reputation on telepathic musical chemistry and impossible technical execution. Their debut LP leaned heavily into live-setting virtuosity. On WHO ASKED?, however, the duo shifts focus toward deliberate arrangement and unpredictable song structures.
Album opener “ÉPiPHANiE” establishes this stylistic evolution immediately. The track utilizes fluttering woodwinds, Steve Reich-inspired piano figures, and acrobatic strings. It acts less like a traditional overture and more like an entry point to a sonic landscape where melodies arrive sideways and rhythms shift constantly.
Vocal Collaborations and Thematic Depth
The first half of the record features a heavy concentration of vocal tracks that blend together stylistically while offering distinct lyrical moments. “GROWiNG OLDER” pairs a central melody with direct commentary on the passage of time, supported by a heartbeat-like bass line and a slippery groove. Similarly, “SMALL EYES” constructs a complex musical arrangement around an earnest dedication to a pet.
Elsewhere, tracks use sharp contrasts to comment on external pressures. “LOVELY MASQUERADE” functions as a critique of the modern music industry, transitioning from a faux-cheerful refrain into a chaotic final minute featuring distorted synth bass and JD Beck’s aggressive physical drumming. Conversely, “PUZZLE PiECES” adopts a softer tone, pairing lyrics about mutual friendship and faith with glitchy electronic production.
Instrumental Highlights and Arranger Ambition
While the sophomore LP features only three instrumentals compared to the ten on their debut, critics note their elevated impact. “CONCERTiNO (FOR PiANO, DRUMS & ORCHESTRA)” moves rapidly between chamber music conventions and intelligent dance music (IDM) styles. The closing track, “ÉPiLOGUE,” finishes the album with a woodwind-driven sprint that mirrors the performers’ kinetic public personas.
Ultimately, WHO ASKED? demonstrates that DOMi and JD Beck are no longer satisfied with merely astonishing audiences with fast tempos and complex time signatures.
