Domenico Tedesco is the new manager of Fenerbahce, the Turkish club announced Tuesday, succeeding Jose Mourinho after the Portuguese coach’s dismissal last month. Tedesco has signed a two-year contract with the istanbul-based team.
The appointment marks a return to club management for the 39-year-old Italian-German coach, who most recently managed the Belgium national team from February 2023 until January of this year. Prior to that,Tedesco gained experience leading schalke,Spartak Moscow, and RB Leipzig. Fenerbahce announced on X (formerly Twitter) that former team captain Gokhan Gonul will assist Tedesco.
Mourinho was relieved of his duties on August 29 following Fenerbahce’s failure to qualify for the Champions League group stage, losing to Benfica in the playoff round. Despite arriving in Istanbul 14 months ago with a stated ambition to end the club’s title drought – “No promises. But it is obvious that the main target, the main dream is to win the Turkish Super Lig” – Mourinho could not deliver a championship for the 19-time league winners, who last lifted the trophy in 2014.
Last season, mourinho guided Fenerbahce to a second-place finish in the Turkish Super Lig, behind Galatasaray.Tedesco will now be tasked with overcoming Galatasaray and securing the league title for the Yellow Canaries.
